Following a number of successful trials, County Courts are now beginning to offer free mediation services to try and resolve small claims before they go to court. This is an optional service that is initiated after the claim has been made but is only available in some courts.
You should contact your local County Courts to find out if they can help. Alternatively, the National Mediation Helpline can put you in touch with a local mediatior, but this is a paid service.
